Carbon credit case studies

Managing carbon credit projects in Brazil isn’t straight forward, from legal due diligence around land ownership to the validation and verification of projects with Verra or other crediting programmes. The multidisciplinary team at Vieira Rezende brings together talented lawyers across environmental, real estate, litigation, corporate and tax law to support our clients with carbon credit projects of all sizes.

Due diligence for a car manufacturer and carbon consultancy joint venture

The Vieira Rezende real estate and environmental teams conducted due diligence to assess ownership, property rights, and regulatory compliance. This work was to ensure the validity and transferability of carbon credits – a project handled by us to support a joint venture between a giant car manufacturer and a company that helps businesses reduce their carbon emissions. Our thorough evaluation safeguarded our client’s interests, facilitated informed decision-making, and mitigated potential risks. Contributing to the successful acquisition of carbon credits while advancing sustainable initiatives.

Legal advice for a family office to develop carbon credit projects

We provided legal advice for a family office, a wealth advisory firm for ultra-high-net-worth families, around the development of carbon credit projects in the Amazon. This was initially for projects in the state of Acre and Amazon as, including due diligence on the areas involved, negotiation with landowners, drafting all project agreements, and negotiation with all the stakeholders. This involved local communities and public authorities, and a site visit with the technical team and auditors.

Carbon credits project for an impact investor in Amazonia

The Vieira Rezende team offered legal advice to an impact investment client around the development of carbon credit projects on properties located in Amazonia – the Aripuana River Valley Carbon Credit Project. The project was created by a Brazilian start-up based in Mato Grosso which aims to address climate change, bring long-lasting impacts to communities, and help preserve the forest and its sustainable use.
