Energy potential and sustainability

Brazil's energy matrix has immense potential for renewable energy generation due to its strategic geographical location, favourable climate, abundant water resources, strong agricultural base, and diverse topography. According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), 84% of the electricity consumed in Brazil comes from renewable sources. Additionally, 45% of the country's total energy matrix—including fuels—originates from sustainable sources such as solar, biomass, biogas, wind, and primarily hydropower. This percentage is significantly higher than the global average, of just 14.7%, underscoring Brazil's ability to sustain a diversified energy matrix while minimizing environmental impacts.

In this context, Brazil is emerging as a key hub for the development of the renewable energy market, with a strong focus on data processing and Artificial Intelligence advancements. A study by MIT Lincoln Laboratory projects that data centers will account for 21% of global electricity consumption by 2030, highlighting the growing demand for uninterrupted power.

Ensuring data centers' continuous operation and consistent performance requires highly reliable and well-scaled energy solutions, guaranteeing a stable and uninterrupted power supply. Self-generated energy production is one of the most established and market-ready technologies, and it is already regulated in Brazil. The primary goal of this model is to provide a stable and uninterrupted energy supply while reducing energy costs, enhancing efficiency, and increasing corporate energy autonomy.

"Brazil offers vast opportunities for renewable energy generation and boasts a well-developed energy market. From established utility providers to advanced technology for building self-sufficient power plants, Brazil offers a range of options to ensure supply redundancy. Data centers will not only drive energy demand but also stimulate financial growth in the sector," says Paula Padilha, partner at Vieira Rezende’s Energy & Natural Resources practice.

This scenario positions Brazil as a key player in the global energy transition, not only due to its favorable investment environment but also for its innovative policies that foster the growth of clean and sustainable energy sources.
